Online Resume

Hello,

My name is Billy Barnes. I am a senior at Bucknell University earning a degree in Markets, Innovation, and Design. While studying at Bucknell, I have developed a passion for learning about how individuals interact with brands and space. Because of these interests, I tailored my academic experience around educating myself on consumer behavior, marketing strategies, and architectural history. To educate myself on these topics, a majority of my classes have taken place in Bucknell’s School of Management, but I have also taken many classes in Bucknell’s art department to learn about principles of design and how individuals interact with space. Outside of the classroom, I have engaged in a variety of activities that I am passionate about. These range from club water polo to SpeakUP Bucknell, which is a student group that educates Bucknellians about sexual assault and bystander intervention. Not only have these activities allowed me to explore my passions, they also have given me the opportunity to make positive connections with a wide range of individuals.

In my free time, I happily jump at any opportunity to be outside. While my favorite activities included skiing, hiking, and playing sports with friends, I also enjoy stringing up a hammock and reading or chatting with friends. The reason why I enjoy the outdoors is because it is where I am able to clear my head and find peace. Another one of my favorite past times is exploring new places. I find it thrilling traveling to a new place, and it excites me when I discovering new things that I never knew existed. When exploring new places, I always make sure that I have my camera in hand. I find it important to have my camera because it allows me to capture moments, places, and people that capture my attention. While I love taking photographs, I also enjoy taking a moment to become an observer in these new places by letting the world go by me. The moments when I step back and simply take in my surroundings are the moments when I feel most connected to a space and learn the most from it.

Anywho, I just wanted to share a little bit about myself before you explore my website. Hopefully this should help give you a better idea of who I am and what I can bring to the table. If you have any questions for me feel free to send me an email. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks for visiting and I hope you enjoy!

All the best,
Billy Barnes

PlayWorld Systems

In the Fall of 2015, I and three other classmates where presented with a unique design challenge in our Design Realization class. Our challenge was to design a novel piece of playground equipment for Playworld Systems. The objective of this piece of equipment was to allow a child to egress a deck of at least 6 feet. In order to construct this piece of equipment, my team and I had worked through the entire design process.

To begin the design process, my team first searched for inspiration. While every member had their own technique to find inspiration, my source of inspiration was reflecting on my experiences playing outside as a children and going on walks outside. After generating as many ideas as we could individually and as a group, we began identifying the issues of the design problem and conceptualize our solution. As we conceptualized our solution, my team and I continue to explore the problem and refine our solution. To ensure that our exploration was as in depth as possible, we carried out multiple observational studies of play areas and interviewed a variety of playground stakeholders. As we went through this process of exploration and refinement, my team and I began to converge on a solution and develop a model of our solution. After refining our model numerous times, we finally developed a solution that excited us and Playworld. The results of our work can be seen below.

Energy Rehab

In the Fall of 2014, I along with three other classmates were asked to design a website for a local business: Energy Rehab. Energy Rehab is a mobile physical therapy practice that assist patients with a variety of physical therapy needs. To design the website we used a web template from WIX.com, photographs (from the owners and flickr’s creative commons), and created original content. In order for the website to meet the high standards of the owners and communicate Energy Rehab’s message properly, I was in constant communication with Energy Rehab’s owners throughout the entire design process.

In addition to designing a web site for Energy Rehab, my team and I also helped Energy Rehab develop their brand and image. At the time, Energy Rehab was only a few months old and their energy was entirely focused on acquiring a customer base. As a result, they were spreading their brand very thinly and it was difficult for the owners to strongly communicate their message. To remedy this, my team and I worked with them to create a message that allowed them to clearly communicate what Energy Rehab is. The results of our work can be seen below.
